What is prematurity?
Prematurity is when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. The earlier a baby is born, the higher the risk of health problems.
Prematurity is also called preterm, preterm birth, a premature baby, or preemie.
Premature birth can cause a lot of guilt and anxiety for parents. They may blame themselves or feel that they failed to protect their baby. However, these feelings are normal and not based on reality. There are many factors that can lead to premature birth, and most of them are beyond anyone’s control. The most important thing is to focus on the positive steps that can be taken to help the baby grow and thrive after birth!
There are different degrees of prematurity:
- Extremely preterm: Born at or before 25 weeks of pregnancy.
- Very preterm: Born at or before 26-31 weeks of pregnancy.
- Moderately preterm: Born between 32-34 weeks of pregnancy.
- Late preterm: Born between 34-36 weeks of pregnancy completed.
